When it comes to being a home cook, people tend to think less of the quality when compared to a restaurant. I find this to be blatantly false as I know many people who can cook quality food on their own. I have been a self-taught home chef for the past seven years and do not limit myself with what I can cook. As a home cook I live by the moto that there is always pizza just one call away.
Through my trials and tribulations of learning to cook has taught me valuable skills in the kitchen that professional chefs use in their everyday career. I have found a love of French and East Asian cuisine in my own practice and find the skills transferrable to other types of cuisine.
I also have experience changing recipes for a gluten allergy. My partner of three years has a gluten allergy, yet this has not stopped me from making tender chocolatey cupcakes or from making breaded buttermilk chicken tenders. With this in mind there will always be some substitutions for those with such allergies, such as using King Arthur brand of gluten free flour over the normal all-purpose.
Through this blog we will explore tips and tricks for newcomers to the kitchen and some recipes of my own design that I have perfected over my years of experience. There will also be a focus this within the realm of a college student income food budget to accommodate the ever-increasing food costs. Many "fancy" appearing dishes and desserts can be made with simply priced items and result in marvelous food. For those of you new to cooking, this is a great place to start, and I look forward to this journey with you.
I will also show where inspiration for recipes come from. I often do not follow a set recipe, but I love to be inspired by fellow chefs out there. I also do love to follow professional recipes of new dishes to me. For example, a baker I come back to time and again is Claire Saffitz who has many glorious recipes that I love and we will mostly likely explore one of her recipes through this blog.
As a preview of coming attractions to this blog here are recent dishes I made. Which include a broccoli cheddar egg soufflé, a pan seared chicken on a bed of rice with green beans and a compound butter, and gluten free buttermilk chicken tenders with fresh French fries and fried pickles.
In the end, this blog will hopefully help you along your journey to finding your home in the kitchen and not fearing experimentation. The kitchen opens you up to a multitude of opportunity of flavor and through it all I am looking for your input on the recipes and what interest you have in content. I have so much I cannot wait to share, and I look forward to interacting with you all.
This is pretty cool. I have learned to cook over the years, especially after my parents got divorced. I had to learn to do many more things, and one of those things was cooking. What you can do with cooking is endless and their is so much potential with something like this.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate that someone is creating a blog like this. I know that, for me personally, cooking is a daunting task. A close friend of mine is also gluten-free, so it is nice that I'll be able to try some of the recipes with them, too. I am excited for the next post!
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you you're breaking down the misconception that restaurant food is superior. It’s clear from your experience and passion that home cooking can be just as high-quality, if not better! I’m excited to see the recipes and tips you’ll share, especially for college students on a budget like myself. Your dishes look incredible, and I’m definitely interested in learning more about the process, especially with French and East Asian cuisine. Have you ever tapped in to cooking foods from Latin American countries?
ReplyDeleteAs a mom, I had to learn how to cook many dishes but I do not love to do it. I am always looking for some inspirations to expand my menu. These pictures look amazing and if they are budget friendly, I love it even more. Can't wait to see how easy to make are these delicious dishes.
